Happy New Year!

…. and Happy Birthday Papa! As my dad said in an email to me, “A special prayer goes up for Papa on his 79th birthday on Earth and his first birthday in heaven.”

Well, not too much has been going on this week. Just working hard and trying to get through the first full week I have worked in nearly 2 months. I think I sneaked a full week of work in during a week in December, but I’m not certain. Anyway, it’s Wednesday and it’s kinda rough.

Last night Frank and I booked tickets for a trip to San Francisco in March. We are just crazy travelers!!! I think after that trip, all will be quiet on the traveling front until June when we go to Florida for Garrick and Jill’s wedding. Hurrah for them!!!

Okay, I have to go. Work calls!

When do you stop…

…putting birthdays on your calendar?

I’m not talking about the birthday reminders for your husband or girlfriends or aunts and uncles. I’m talking about the birthday on your calendar for someone who would be celebrating their 90th birthday–but isn’t. Someone who should be licking the frosting off of their 30th birthday candles, but won’t.

And you know, I just don’t think you do. I think you keep those birthdays in your palm pilot, in your day planner and in your heart because when someone dies, if you love them, I don’t think you stop celebrating their life.

Grandma R died December 12th, 1999 and Grandpa R died in 1987. Both of their birthdays were in October. I still have them on my calendar because I think it’s good to think about them. I think it helps me to remember them and to give them a little “hurrah.”

Papa died July 5th in the early hours of the morning. Next Wednesday he would have been 79.

Happy Birthday, Papa!

Merry Christmas and a HAPPY New Year!

Well, this was our first married Merry Christmas! It really gets a lot more hectic when you factor in two families and their traditions AND try to do it all in the same time frame–eek! Fortunately our parents are flexible and basically told us that we should do whatever we wanted and that would be fine with them. Let me tell you, that sure makes it easy!

Christmas Eve

Well, we thought that we were going over to my Aunt Janyne’s (in Lake Zurich) for hors d’oeuvres. (Sp?) We figured we would hang out over there for a few hours and then drive down to Oak Brook for church. Heh. Sometimes even the best laid plans just don’t work out. Turns out that Auntie Nee-nee (my name for her when I was little), decided to have a full turkey dinner instead. That would be okay if we ate around 6 ish. But since some family wasn’t getting there until 6:30, we didn’t eat until 7. We should have just left at 7:30 like we had planned, but we felt bad eating and running. We could have left at 9 or so and gone to the 11pm service, but FK was flying the next morning and had to be up at 4:30am. Yes. I’m not joking.

So our plans on going to church completely unraveled. Gr.

Christmas Morning

I vaguely recall FK getting out of bed and leaving for work. I do know that I told him he looked nice, to which he replied, “Emily, it’s completely dark in here–how do you know I look nice?” And I responded by rolling over. Hrmph. How can he be so sure I don’t have night vision???

I woke up around 7ish, cleaned up, showered and then had some pancakes ready for Frank when he came back from his flight to Milwaukee. Being 5 years old at heart, I couldn’t fathom the idea of Christmas morning without opening SOMETHING. So FK caved and let me open our gifts. He opened his first. I gave him several movies and CDs. Then I opened his. Oh my gosh–I thought I had been extravagant for the several movies and CDs–but he really went over the top!!! He gave us both a trip to Nassau in February! A five day, all inclusive trip to the Bahamas!!! OH MY GOSH!!! I’m sooooooooo excited!! eeeeek! I jumped on his lap and kissed him all over his face. He likes it. 🙂

Christmas Day

After I calmed down, we drove up to Antioch to visit FK’s family. I love them–we had a blast watching Luke, our favorite form of entertainment. See, Luke, is quite the little character (he is my 1 1/2 yr old nephew). He was taking grape tomatoes and jamming them in his mouth until he had 5 or 6. Then, when he finally bit down, juice and seeds came spurting out of his mouth. Panicked, he ran over to Grandma K and spit the rest out in her hands. OH MY GOODNESS. Too funny!!!

After the K house, we drove down to Palatine to see my side. We opened gifts and ate prime rib and had a jolly old time! 🙂 My parents got a pool table and a hockey game. It was surprising to see how good my grandma is ate the hockey game! Even with Parkinson’s, she scored SEVERAL goals!

The Day After

After our awesome Christmas, FK and I had tickets to go to the Hawk’s game. We hadn’t been to a game yet this season, so it was exciting to finally get to go! We went to the Locker Room for dinner and then watched the Hawks lose to the worst team in the division, the Blue Jackets. That team hadn’t won any games on the road, so I guess they were bound to win eventually…

The Day After the Day After

We drove down to Metamora, IL to watch my cousin David M marry Angie S in a very sweet winter ceremony. Not very wintery, though. It was 55 degrees!!! eeek! We had a lot of fun with our family, too!

A new mall for my list:

So my sister took me to the mall she works at in St. Louis. She works at the Banana Republic in the Galleria. Fantastic, right? OH MY GOSH. This is a cool little mall! It definitely makes my top five–although where in the list of things, I’m not sure!

They have a Kids Gap, a Women’s Gap and a Men’s Gap. That’s right–their Gaps are so big that they are SEPARATE STORES!!! Who knew it? And they also have a cool shoe store Caiter took me too. And the parking is great–a long several story parking garage with direct entrances to the mall was fantastic. You hardly have to be in nature at all!

So the Galleria has moved to my list!

Have I ever mentioned my top 5 hot guy list? It’s all celebrities, but here it is:

5. Tim Robbins

4. Collin Firth

3. Tom Hanks

2. John Mayer

1. Ryan Stiles

I know–I do it backwards. Somehow I feel like this leaves everyone in suspense, but now I realize it’s kind of lame. So here it is in the right order:

1. Ryan Stiles

2. John Mayer

3. Tom Hanks

4. Collin Firth

5. Tim Robbins

Anyway–rah! almost done with today!!!

92% Done with 2003

So with 8% of the year remaining and a new year just a few weeks away, it seems like now is as good of a time as any to have Thanksgiving.

I know, my stamp of approval was needed to affirm a national holiday.

It just seems like a wise idea to kick off the busiest month with a holiday that gives time to pause and reflect. And energize for crazed “Green Friday” shopping. Of course, I doubt the Pilgrims were chomping down on their splendid dinner thinking, “Great, I’ll fuel up now and I’ll be able to hit all of the sales from 6am till 9pm. Can’t wait!!” Anyway, ’tis the season to rush, rush, rush!

A girl my senior year in high school once asked the class of ’98 why we were counting down the best days of our lives. Why were we so eager to hurry through this carefree time? But no one cared. Besides, her question came too late–the last day of school our senior year. Rah! Freedom!!!

But I think she was a little right. Maybe even a lot. What was the rush?

So this year, I am going to savor every minute of frantic holiday shopping. I think I’m going to make cookies. I am going to let every day drip by as slowly as I can. Because what is the rush? Where are we going so fast? As an old woman (23), I don’t have a Barbie I am anxiously waiting to open on Christmas Day. There is no post-present high on Christmas morning. And that is just fine by me.

I get to start and finish this holiday season with weddings–one of my dearest friends, Erin B, is getting married on 12/6 and my cousin Dave M is getting married on 12/27. There is a lot to celebrate this December. Our first Thanksgiving kicks it off. Our first Christmas. Our first New Year.

There is so much to be said for a fantastic husband, a wonderful family and terrific friends. I can’t wait to spend time with everyone this holiday season!

So–it’s cold. I moan a lot about that. But after I’m done whining, I’m going to heat up some soup, make a sandwich, curl up on the couch and watch time slide by…

ahhhh…

A case of the Mondays….

Well, I don’t actually have a case of the Mondays. I just thought of Office Space and that line. Hee hee. The weekend was nice.

Friday, the Gs came over and we ate some Chicken Marsala that I made. Very proud of myself for that. Then we sat on the porch and drank wine and had some pie. Very good!

Saturday Frank and I took care of a few chores and took a nap and had breakfast together. Then in the afternoon we saw my brother’s marching band compete at Prospect H.S. They took 2nd in AA Class. Awesome! After that, we went to dinner with my mom, dad and some of their friends at Bob Chinn’s Crab House in Wheeling. What a fantastic dinner! We were quite tired and pretty much collapsed in bed when we came home Saturday night.

Sunday Frank went to work early to fly a long trip. Kelly H came over and we drove up to Great America for a day of Fright Fest–woohoo!!! Then Frank and I had some Jimmy John dinner and wrote thank you notes. Who doesn’t love that???

It was a pretty nice weekend. I did miss not going to church. Hm.

I hope everyone else had a great weekend! And Jamie, no–it is you that rocks. Woohoo! You updated again on Friday–that is just too exciting!! Now we just have to get Jane to update…..

Love and Marriage.

Well, here we are, married for over 2 weeks now. We are still writing thank you notes and organizing our apartment. Thanks to years of collecting items we simply cannot let go and very generous friends and relatives, we have a lot of stuff to squeeze into our apartment. Normally I would be all up in Frank’s face about what a disaster the “Staging Area” is (nickname for our 2nd bedroom/office/mess), but there is so much to do, I have put off fixing up the 2nd bedroom until we finish thank you notes, clean out his bedroom in Antioch, organize the China and preserve my wedding dress. Did I mention that the holidays are next month?? And then one of my dearest friends ever is getting hitched in December? Followed by more holidays??? Oh goodness!!!

Anyway, this marriage thing is pretty decent.

Friday: Frank and I came home from work. Frank actually picked me up at the train and took me home. The pizza arrived and we ate pizza, listened to music and talked. After dinner, we wrote thank you notes and watched Romeo + Juliet (the newer version) and went to bed. It was a lovely night.

Saturday: We woke up and drove to Frank’s work. I dropped him off and went up to my parents’ house. They weren’t there. (Not entirely surprising–very busy people!) I had some shopping to do and then I needed to get home and get dinner started because Craig and Jamie were coming over for dinner. Craig and Jamie arrived a little late (thank goodness! I was running behind!) We had a nice dinner, drank some marguritas (Nice job, Frank and Craig on the margaritas!! Turns out they are lovely floor polishes as well!) and then watched the video of our wedding. Woohoo!

Sunday: I went to church with the in-laws. Afterward we had a light lunch together. They are nice to talk to and I enjoy spending time with them. Then I drove up to my parents’ house again, this time they were there. We chatted and then Dad and Andy-the-stud helped me move some more of my stuff out of the house.

Frank was supposed to be home around 5 or 6, but around 6:30 (when he finally got signal on his cell!), he called to tell me that he was going to be WAY late. Turns out he didn’t get home from his trip until 10pm!! Poor guy! He hasn’t had a day off since we came home from the honeymoon 😦

What is so nice about the marriage thing is that we might be busy, but we still get to see each other more than we did before.

Let’s see… I think that’s all for me for now!

Weekend Updates.

Well, it wouldn’t be Monday without me being Grouchy and the weekend being updated. Or something.

Why I am Grouchy.

You may notice that at this particular time I prefer to use a capital “G” for Grouchy. This is because I am just that Grouchy. It all started with a phone conversation with FK and here I am, pissy as all heck. I think part of it is because FK and I discussed a phone call I have to make to one of the vendors to express my concerns over what was offered for the reception. I happen to like this vendor, but they have left us with no other choice than for me to call and be the concerned, fretting bride. “I am soooo concerned, I thought you were on my side. I thought you could make this happen–that’s why we’re paying you all this money. This is incredibly important to us. I just don’t understand how this could have become so intolerable. I just don’t understand why you can’t make my day happen the way you promised.” The thought of getting on the phone and being “that” girl makes me nauseous. But in the interest of time and getting things straightened out, I must do it. I’d send FK in, but we reserve him for the big dogs–things I absolutely refuse to handle.  I’d send Mom in, but that is an absolute last resort. So here I am, Grouchy and Pissy and just in general Cranky.

The Weekend

The weekend was fantastic. Friday, Frank moved all of the stuff into the apartment with the help of my darling brother, Andy, my mother, Mary and my grandma, Rosemary. Grandma really just sat on her chair and directed traffic (which I’m sure was oh-so-helpful!). By the time I got home from work, everything was moved in and we all headed out to return the UHaul and get some dinner. We dined at the always high class Chevy’s. It was yummy! Then after we dropped the family off at home, FK and I got BACK into the car and went to Lombard to a little bit of tidying in his sister Karen’s townhouse. FK had finished cleaning his bedroom and the office prior to the move, but still needed to scrub down the bathroom. At 11 we were finished and back on the road, heading up to Palatine for the night.

The next morning I awakened Frank and we had some cereal and went down to the new apartment in Naperville (READ: A LOT OF DRIVING THIS WEEKEND!) and let the bed movers into the apartment to set up our new bed! The bed is super squishy, very nice quality and a KING. Thank God! I put the sheets on the bed with the new pillows Mom gave us for the shower and washed the duvet. I headed off to the store while FK took a shower. When I came home, we unloaded groceries and I started cleaning while Frank headed off to work. I spent all day scrubbing, doing dishes, doing laundry, organizing, assembling and then later, cooking! We had our first grown up dinner without Missy (my dog) panting at the table, Frank’s sister watching over us, my parents providing commentary or other typical distractions. Yes, we do love our families, but sometimes the peace is just so nice! We washed dishes together and then explored our new apartment complex, finally locating the fitness center and club house–yay!!

Sunday I woke up at my leisure (which is usually 8 or so) and had some breakfast, took a shower, finished some wedding stuff and then went down to the airport. I normally put together a BBQ, but the grill was out of propane so I finished “Thank You” notes instead. Frank’s student made it back just before the storms hit, thankfully, so we were able to get out of the airport in time to grab some dinner with Frank’s (and my) friend Miss Laura P and one of Frank’s coworkers, Dustin H. We had a delightful dinner at Olive Garden before returning to the airport. I dropped Frank off at his car and we chatted a bit longer with Laura and Dustin before Frank went to Naperville and I went to Palatine.

The only downside to this whole apartment thing is that Frank is now 1 hour away as opposed to the previous 30 minute drive we had to endure. This means that we will probably not see eachother as often as we like, but we only have 46 days to go–I think we’ll make it!!

Weekend…

Well, this weekend was mostly productive. We have a lot left to do before the wedding, though! Crazy times!! Frank is moving into the apartment August 1st and we still have to get the bed. I have the bed on the brain–I repeat it to him frequently like if I stop telling him we need a bed I might forget!

Our first shower is on Sunday. My MOH (also my sister) is throwing it. I think it will be a blast–yeehaw!

60 days to the wedding! And so much to do!!

Wedding Updates:

Busy weekend! Mom, Cait and I finished up all the wedding invitations and sent those out. Mom got the last of them stamped last night–yippy! So now we just get to wait for reply cards, YAY!!!!

FK and I found our wedding bands. Mine is white gold with a thin band of diamonds. My big diamond has little diamond friends!!! FK’s is also white gold, but it’s a larger, more manly ring, and it has a subtle braid going through the center with a bevelled edge (sorta). They are beautiful rings. EEEK!

I also found our bedspread at Linens ‘n Things. I love it–it is red with a gold/green embroidered pattern on it. We are going to go back and get the rest soon.

Only 67 days to go!!

Other Updates:

In sadder news, George was injured today when he tried to take on my brother’s suburban. He lost a tail light and bent his bumper. The suburban’s chrome lining around the wheel well was pulled off. Both cars are will hopefully recover from their injuries in the next couple of weeks. Although, I can’t lie to you… George’s ego is hurt and I think he’s ready for another show down…

Down boy, down…
